DAN/R.W. (Bill) Hamilton Memorial Research Grant in Dive Medicine, sponsored by DAN ($10,000)

Virginie Papadopoulou

Virginie is a postdoctoral research associate in the Dayton Lab at UNC Chapel Hill, USA. She received her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Imperial College, London, UK, in 2016. A diving instructor herself, her thesis focused on bubble formation, growth, and circulation dynamics from hyperbaric decompression. In the future, she hopes to lead a research group focused on tailoring ultrasound techniques for monitoring human physiological adaptations to extreme environments, bridging the different areas dealing with bubbles in the bloodstream, from environmentally triggered endogenous bubbles potentially leading to decompression sickness, to engineered contrast agents for ultrasound imaging and therapy of cancer.
