The Ocean Pals Scholarship

Sharon Progar Norwood

Sharon Progar was a senior at Lake Central High School when she received this award. She was first introduced to the world of diving during her sophomore year in 2005. She became Open Water certified for her high school’s Marine Biology trip to Key Largo, Florida where she dove in the Florida Keys. In Florida she became enthusiastic about marine life and decided to study marine biology after high school. In fall 2007 Sharon attended Texas A&M at Galveston, and in 2011 received the Marine Technology Society Scholarship. She is currently an Oil and Gas Project Engineer with 4 years of combined experience providing technical support in LNG and oilfield services. “Since receiving the WDHF Scholarship, I completed my PADI Divemaster certification in 2007 before attending college in Texas. I graduated from Texas A & M University at Galveston in 2012 with a degree in Maritime Systems Engineering. Because I was a recipient of the WDHOF Scholarship, I had several unique opportunities to use my divemaster certification. While I was a college student, I worked as a divemaster for a local dive shop where I assisted with the pool sessions and checkout dives for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. In addition, I also helped with the Houston NASA Space Camp students, working as a divemaster. To mimic life in space, students assembled a mock space unit in a pool while using scuba and I supervised the students underwater. This year my husband (also a PADI Divemaster) and I spent our honeymoon in Fiji, where we spent several days diving Namena Marine Reserve and diving with hammerhead sharks. Having our divemaster certifications has contributed to us having many enjoyable dives in Cozumel, Roatan, Grand Cayman, and Belize.”
