WDHOF/Cecelia Connelly Memorial Scholarship in Underwater Archaeology, sponsored by the Connelly family

Mónica G. Grosso

The archaeology of shipwrecks attracted Mónica since she was in high school. “My dream began to turn into reality when I entered the university and started a diving course.” In 2006 she obtained a Licenciatura in Anthropology, specialization in Archaeology, with a dissertation in underwater archaeology at Universidad de Buenos Aires. In 2009, Mónica became one of the first professional scientific divers in Argentina. She has been involved in several research projects on wreck sites along the Patagonian coast and has participated in excavations in Brazil and Portugal. In 2011 she earned a Ph.D. in Archaeology at Universidad de Buenos Aires. The 2010 WDHOF/Cecelia Connelly Memorial Scholarship in Underwater Archaeology was of great support to accomplish the field work. Her research was focused on the study of wooden material culture and natural site formation processes at the HMS Swift, an 18th century British warship wrecked in Patagonia. Since then she has been involved in several research projects related to wreck sites along the Patagonian Argentinean coast as a researcher of the Programa de Arqueología Subacuática - PROAS (Underwater Archaeology Program) at Instituto Nacional de Antropología, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The numerous wrecks make shipwreck archaeology research at this region an amazing challenge and holds a promise of great dives!!
