Maya is a Ph.D. student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in theCastillo & McCoy labs. She is an AAUS scientific diver and is conducting her dissertation research in Curacao in collaboration with Dr. Verena Schoepf. Her work aims to understand the effects of extreme and marginal environments on coral microbiome and symbiont communities, and how these communities may aid in acclimatization and resilience. Maya is excited to use this research to identify beneficial consortiums of microbes that will allow for development of coral probiotics to aid in coral restoration.
