WDHOF/Cecelia Connelly Memorial Scholarship in Underwater Archaeology, sponsored by the Connelly family

Marilyn Cassedy

Marilyn grew up as a competitive junior sailor, but when she went on to collegiate sailing, found herself more interested in the seafarers of the past. Majoring in ancient Greek at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Marilyn went on to Texas A&M, where she completed an M.A. in nautical archaeology in 2014. Her thesis focused on the social standing of shipwrights in the classical world through their depictions in the literature, epigraphy and papyri of their contemporaries. Marilyn has had the chance to excavate at two sites in Turkey, and was able to travel to Turkey to participate in the final season of excavation at the Kizilburun column-carrying shipwreck as a direct result of the WDHOF Cecelia Connelly Memorial Scholarship she was awarded. Marilyn is currently working as a college department sales representative for Norton, Inc. where she travels to campuses across central and southern California to meet with professors about their course needs and provide solutions to their challenges from W.W. Norton’s offerings. In addition to in-person sales calls, she is responsible for setting up presentations and providing customer service to maintain and grow the sales territory.
