Kitty is a Ph.D. candidate in Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, specializing in geographic information systems for coastal and marine spatial planning. She uses collaborative online mapping tools to study how crowd-sourced geographic information can reveal people’s priorities regarding environmental issues. Prior to graduate school, Kitty spent four years aboard the research vessels of the Biosphere Foundation, monitoring the condition of coral reefs throughout the South Pacific and Southeast Asia. In the future she hopes to continue working in these regions to teach practical geospatial skills for marine environmental monitoring and management.
