Kathryn, “Kate” Levasseur is a Presidential Fellow at the University of South Carolina, pursuing a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology with an emphasis on conservation genetics. Her research focuses on a hawksbill sea turtle nesting assemblage in the Eastern Caribbean. She is looking at the population structure, life history patterns and nesting behavior of this group of marine turtles by using genetic markers to supplement over two decades of mark-recapture nesting data collected by the Jumby Bay Hawksbill Project in Antigua, West Indies. By combining research and community outreach efforts, Kate aspires to strengthen recovery strategies for the endangered hawksbill turtle.
