Julia is a Ph.D. student at the University of British Columbia’s Institute for the Ocean and Fisheries. Her research aims to improve public understanding of climate change’s impact on our oceans and the ensuing consequences for coastal ecosystems. Specifically, her thesis seeks to determine the spatial extent of kelp seaforestation projects along British Columbia’s coastlines, as the restoration and management of kelp forests are considered essential for climate mitigation and adaptation. This grant enables her to enhance theoretical knowledge by immersing herself in local kelp forests, experiencing firsthand their wide range of contributions to the surrounding environment and communities.
