Jess is a Ph.D. candidate at James Cook University, Australia, based full-time in the field in Praia do Tofo, Mozambique. Her research assesses the impacts of illegal fishing on Mozambican turtle populations. She has been developing an in-water monitoring program using recreational divers as citizen scientists. The program is the first of its kind for Mozambique, and the citizen science photo-ID images will allow for individual animal residency and population demographics to be evaluated. Additionally her project involves documenting the motivations and reasons for poaching turtles. She is planning on traveling to present the findings of the photo-ID work at the next 35th international sea turtle symposium, in Dalaman, Turkey.
