Graduate Scholarship in Marine Conservation, sponsored by WDHOF Member Meg Donat

Gemma Galbraith

Gemma is a Ph.D. candidate at James Cook University and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, Townsville, Australia. Her thesis examines the ecology of reef fishes on submerged pinnacle coral reefs - small, deep patch reefs which share many physical characteristics with seamounts. Her research is conducted in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea, where the diverse and dynamic seascape provides an ideal study site. Gemma is fascinated by biodiversity and understanding how such small, deep, and different forms of coral reef can support diverse and abundant ecological communities. Characterizing understudied and unexplored marine habitats is essential to inform effective conservation planning - if we don’t know what is there, how can we protect it?
