As an undergrad, Emma had the privilege of participating in an underwater archaeology survey in Israel. This trip left her fascinated with archeology and the underwater world of the ancient Mediterranean. She is now a Master’s candidate in underwater archaeology at the University of Rhode Island. As part of this program, she’s taken part in digs in Bermuda and Akko, Israel. She plans to use the scholarship for a return trip to Israel during the summer of 2014, which would not only allow her to continue her research at Akko, which is focused on identifying solutions to the dilemma of balancing human needs and resources with the study and preservation of underwater cultural heritage, but would also allow her to conduct fieldwork crucial to her thesis, which is centered on the construction of the Herodian harbor at Caesarea.
