The Women Divers Hall of Fame Undergraduate Scholarship in Marine Conservation, sponsored by Sherry Reed

Claire Zabel

Claire is a senior at Stanford University majoring in Earth Systems. Her research at Palmyra Atoll in the equatorial Pacific in 2012, through scuba and skin diving, informed her research on the interaction between coral calcification and seawater chemistry. She plans to use the scholarship to present her findings at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. She plans to attend graduate school to learn more about protecting marine ecosystems from ocean acidification. As a member of Stanford’s Public Service Scholars Program, she wants to ensure that her research serves the greater good of protecting coastal ecosystems. After completing her studies, Claire will work on making scientific investigation a bigger part of policymaking, and also (she hopes) exploring the deep ocean. She is interested in climate change, climate engineering, and the intersection of research and public service.
