Charlene Glahn, an avid scuba diver and breast cancer survivor, was chosen for her devotion and energy to promoting early detection of breast cancer through a unique underwater event that is now being developed for international expansion. In 2002, Glahn rallied a group of loyal friends to help organize the “BCD Dive to Survive” fundraiser that involved the diving community, numerous sponsors and local volunteers in an underwater treasure hunt and silent auction in Guppy Gulch Quarry (near Delta, PA). The one-day event raised more than $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Capt. Kathy Weydig (WDHOF Founder) has said of Charlene, “What is even more remarkable about this project is that Charlene’s mother died of cancer shortly before Dive To Survive took place, yet Charlene forged ahead with a positive attitude and tremendous courage, ensuring that this first time-event would be a success”.
